b70-capa

Below is the debut release by Bixiga70, a Sao Paulo afrobeat big band. Put together by musicians involved  in the Traquitana studio which is based in the Bixiga neighbourhood in the centre of Sao Paulo, a traditional barrio considered by some as the birthplace of Samba. Afrobeat is something which has had a cult following in Sao paulo for a few years now, and I think this can be traced back to when Tony Allen visited here a few years back for a Red Bull Music Academy, since then key names have been name dropping Afrobeat in their influences, leading to now where there are a couple of Brazilian Afrobeat bands playing the live circuit. This is certainly great stuff, funky and groovy in all the right places. As well as the free download route, this lot are also releasing a CD and vinyl. Also nice piece of cover art by DJ and artist MZK.

Passo Torto

passo-torto

Brazilian independent artists have seemingly given up the ghost with the record industry and are putting their latest albums for free on the internet, presumably with the intention of getting shows to create some sort of income. Cultural commentator Alexandre Matias feels that perhaps modern Brazilian artists understand the internet better than their international counterparts.

Whatever this means, in the last month there has been a spate of really interesting releases, all of which I intend to post here over the next few weeks. So, if you like free, legal brazilian contemporary pop music, stay tuned here.

The first release is by Passo Torto, who comprise of four major  indie players:Romulo Fróes, Rodrigo Campos, Kiko Dinucci and Marcelo Cabra who all have other projects but have collaborated together for this delightful project. It’s basically samba, but with touches of just about everything from Bossa to Chorinho. It’s beautifully arranged with no percussion, but still very rhythmic.

You can download it at the site. Put in your email, click “baixar” and bob’s your uncle. Highly recommended.

Criolo – Subirusdoistiozin

Check out the beautiful looking video above for Criolo’s single from his second album “Nó na orelha”, (knot in the ear) produced by Daniel Ganjaman. It is an astounding album where Criolo, originally a rap MC, has decided to branch out and take in samba, soul, reggae and even brega-bolero. A more accomplished Brazilian album, you won’t hear this year. In fact, it’s an album that manages to bridge generations as both me and my teenage son listen to it at home, the crucial difference being, I bought the CD while he downloaded it and put it on his  cell phone. You can download the album for free from Criolo’s site here.

We’ve got tickets to see his show tomorrow, I’m expecting great things.

Nossa Cara! New Sounds of São Paulo

Over at Sounds and Colours dot com they are offering up a free compilation of new sounds from São Paulo, called exactly that.  It’s well worth a download as it offers a nice overview of the current SP indie-ish scene. You have folky bossa nova, warped MPB and some nice experimental pieces and all manner inbetween. The blurb from the site goes like this:

Nossa, Cara! New Sounds of São Paulo in partnership with Brasil Music Exchange features a wide variety of music being made in São Paulo today. M. Takara 3, Psilosamples and Guizado represent some of the exciting electronic music coming out of the city. Chankas and Bodes e Elefantes make music which has a fearless approach to sonic exploration. The sounds of north-eastern Brazil are represented by Iara Rennó, Juçara Marçal e Kiko Dinucci and Metá-Metá (featuring Juçara and Kiko with added Thiago França). R. Brandao and Lurdez da Luz show the way forward for São Paulo hip-hop. They are joined by Tulipa, Bruno Morais and Lulina, who continue the MPB tradition in delightfully absurd ways, Karina Buhr, Juliana R and Bárbara Eugênia who bring a number of new ideas to the Brazilian cantora tradition, and Rafael Castro, who confounds with each new slice of dexterous folk or rock he puts to tape.

MAN 057 JOÃO BRASIL “L.O.V.E. BANANA” FEAT. LOVEFOXXX

JB

Ok, we´ve been bigging this song up for a while now, today is the offical pre-release day of João Brasil´s anthemic “L.O.V.E. Banana” feat. Lovefoxxx.

“L.O.V.E. Banana” by Brasilian mash-up maestro João Brasil features the voice of CSS godess Lovefoxxx praising the many joys the sweet, yellow fruit can bring. With its saucy lyrics, a hard to resist hook, a „Lambada“ inspired melody and the amazing voice of Lovefoxxx, “L.O.V.E Banana” has all the ingredients of a super fun summer anthem.

LOVEFOXXX

On Brasilian MTV Fatboy Slim recently called João Brasil his favourite Brasilian DJ . It´s quiet likely that João , who made headlines in 2010 with his every-day-a-mashup-project “365″ will be soon considered one of the big new talents of 2011. Lovefoxxx is the glamourous front woman of CSS, who are about to release their third album on Sub Pop this summer.

The EP comes with a funky Euro dance remix by Daniel Haaksman, an irresistible disco remix by Polish noveau Piano god Max Skiba, a dirty boogie version by Telonious of Gomma records fame and a Rio baile funk remix by DJ Edgar. The acappella is added for aspiring DJs to make their own versions. Bonus track is the classic „Aguas De Março“ by Tom Jobim, sung by Tecno Brega queen Gaby Amarantos from Belem, in North Brasil.

It´s safe to say that „L.O.V.E. Banana“ is the biggest pop tune that was ever released on Man Recordings. It´s hot, it´s full of fun – and it´s from Brasil! And we are convinced it´s gonna be one of the major tunes of summer 2011.
