MAN 083 BANDA WESTFALICA "VERSIONS REMIXES" EP

The 2013 release of the debut EP of the student percussion ensemble Banda Westfalica from the German city of Bünde, North-Rhine-Westphalia, was an unusual release for Man Recordings. Here were some musicians that would play tropical music exclusively acoustically, focussing on unearthing the rhythmic and melodic structure of originally electronically produced songs from the Man Recordings catalogue which originally would tear clubs apart. Banda Westfalica layed bare the soul of tracks such as “Carimbo” or “Tulum” by Schlachthofbronx, “K Le Pasa” by El Dusty, “El Toro” by Beware + Motorpitch, “Hands Up” by Daniel Haaksman or “Cartagenera” by Dutch Rhythm Combo. The versions on Banda Westfalica´s EP displayed a musicality that was buried deep inside those club bangers – and surprised many. “Versions Remixes” now brings the acoustic versions back to the club.

BANDA WESTFALICA

Teased with the rhythm tracks and dope stems of Banda Westfalica´s 2m-sized Marimba, we asked a handful of hot and upcoming remixers such as Castro, Criolina, Chong-X, Danilo, Alma Negra, Doblhoff & Wiesflecker, Motin and Johnny 500 (a.k.a. Gijs Scheeringa) to re-work the Banda Westfalica versions. The results are stunning, from zouk bass (Danilo) to trap (Johnny 500) to Afro beat inspirations (Doblhoff & Wiessflecker, Alma Negra) to tropical bass (Motin) to finally electronica tuned vibes (Castro UK and Criolina) there´s a vast sonic range in the set of remixes. Many of the remixers are new names on the block, but all proved their skills masterfully. So here´s Banda Westfalica´s “Versions Remixes”.

DJ feedbacks:

Crookers: “Castro remix in my next set!”
Toddla T: “Motin remix is great!”
Munchi: “Danilo Remix – Ha!!”
Mixhell: “Alma Negra remix is dope!”
Schlachthofbronx: Really nice slo-mo vibes on the Chong X Remix!”
Round Table Knights: “Motin remix is dope!”
DJ Sabo: “Johnny 500 mix is cool, thanks!”
Mumdance: “Love the Castro remix!”
Orion: “So dope! I thought the originals couldnt get any better!”

BANDA WESTFALICA REMIX CONTEST

Remix Contest

Banda Westfalica, the German percussion ensemble which released their debut EP “Versions” early 2013, is now scheduling a remix EP with a selection of re-intepretations of their versions of original tracks by Schlachthofbronx, El Dusty, Daniel Haaksman, So Shifty or Dutch Rhythm Combo.

Now you have the chance to take part in a remix contest in which you can pick the stems of two tracks from the EP, “Hands Up” (originally by Daniel Haaksman) or “K Le Pasa” (the So Shifty version, originally by El Dusty). If you like the crisp sounds of a live played Marimba and dope percussions (no Plug-In used in the original recordings), this contest should be for you!

K Le Pasa:

Here´s the rules:

1.) Submission deadline is Monday, February 3rd, 2014

2.) Please only send unmastered tracks, leave some headspace in the pre-master!

3.) Please use the Man Recordings Soundcloud dropbox to send in your version (we won´t accept any download links)

4.) The best three remixes will be officially released on Man Recordings in March on the “Banda Westfalica Remix EP”, alongside remixes by Chong-X, Castro, Criolina, Gijs Scheeringa and Alma Negra. The winners will be announced Friday, 7th of February.

Man 076 Banda Westfalica Versions EP Cover

Banda Westfalica is from the city Bünde in the German area North-Rhine-Westphalia. “Banda” means “group” in Spanish and Portuguese, and it’s Latin rhythms that this nine-headed student percussion ensemble is dedicated to. “Westfalica” is the ancient Latin word for the area of “Westphalia”, located in the far Western part of Germany (where the famous German DJ WestBam also stems from thus calling himself “Westfalica Bambaataa”).

Each Monday afternoon, the Banda meets up for class at Bünde’s music school. The students aged fourteen to nineteen come together to learn to play percussion instruments such as marimba, bongos, cajón, cowbell and cachichi amongst others.

One of the classes students, Sönke Oberschmidt, aged fifteen, has been a huge fan of Man Recordings for a while, and when his music school teacher asked for student’s suggestions of preferred songs, Sönke came up with „Carimbo“ by Schlachthofbronx. The song was rehearsed various times and peformed live on a field trip of the music school. When the mobile phone video of the high street performance made it to Youtube, Schlachthofbronx soon found out about it and were enthusiastic.

Shortly after, Man Recordings label boss Daniel Haaksman got in contact with Sönke and asked whether they’d be up for covering further songs from Man Recordings. Sönke and his ensemble rehearsed for weeks and eventually mastered to play live percussion versions of their favourite Man Recordings songs such as El Dusty‘s „K Le Pasa“ (in the So Shifty version), Schlachthofbronx’ “Tulum“ (and of course „Carimbo), „Hands Up“ by Daniel Haaksman, Beware & Motorpitch‘ “El Toro“ (also in So Shifty’s version) and last but not least „Cartagenera“ by Dutch Rhythm Combo, the solo-project of Daniel Haakman’s younger brother Felix.

In autumn 2012 Daniel and Felix drove to Bünde to record the songs with a mobile studio set up. Now the mixdowns of the recording weekend are finished and we are proud to present the debut EP by Banda Westfalica „Versions“.

Since Tropical Bass is music often associated with heavy bass, rampant sampling, simplicist melodies and sexist lyrics, it is actually often very musical, as these fine cover versions display in a very fascinating way.

So sit down and relax and enjoy the vibrant grooves and sounds of Banda Westfalica!
