Nifty little film above by Ben Cato Clough and Luke Upchurch about the current situation with copyright and the possible future of copyright, Mash-ups and “remix culture” are included in the argument. This post is a continuation of two related films I posted here, back in November.

The state of copyright and the ins and outs of illegal downloading is a subject I hold dear to my heart and it was only this week while talking  to a lawyer that I found out that downloading films and music from rapidshare etc and bit torrent is not actually illegal in Brazil. Apparently it is all linked to some kind of freedom of information where I, as a consumer, can download these things just to check them out, as it were. It does become illegal however, when I start selling things and making profit without paying the copyright owners.

Nice documentary on London pirate radio over at palladiumboots.com.

The blurb sez:

Pirate radio is everywhere in London, born in the 60’s from rusting anti-aircraft towers in the mouth of the Thames. Today’s broadcasts are hidden in plain sight, transmitting from secret tower block studios via homemade rooftop antennas. We put our boots on and went exploring.

This looks great! Recorded between 2006 and 2009, this documentary by directors Vladimir Cunha and Gustavo Godinho looks at the tecnobrega scene in Belém, Pará. Tecnobrega is defined in the film blurb as the digital adaption of romantic music from the 70s and 80s. The focus of the film is the relation of tecnobrega to the new business model of selling and distributing music that this unlikely genre seems to be pioneering.

The documentary features  the tecnobrega MC, Marcos Maderito,  the ”Garoto Alucinado”; DJ Maluquinho, a type of Iggy Pop brega from the periferia of Belém;and the DJs Dinho, Ellysson  and Juninho,  idols of the aparelhagens, enormous sound systems that are the main attractions of tecnobrega.

Even better is the fact you can download the film for free here.
