We just got word from Rio that DJ Amazing Clay, one of baile funk´s pioneer DJs, passed away last night of cancer. RIP Clay, you´ll be sadly missed. Besides being long term DJ for Rio´s Curtisom Rio sound system, the Amazing Clay studio has been pivotal for the funk carioca sound on Man Recordings. It was there where we recorded all acappellas for the Funk Mundial series and enjoyed long, sweaty sessions of sample swapping and beat making. Accompanying you on tour through Germany and Poland with your MPC was a blast, and showed me a lot of the magic of live MPCing. You´ll be in our hearts forever.

P.S. I found the above papers leaving a baile party one early morning when last visiting Rio . Displayed are labels that mark the price (5 R$ or 10 R$), the distributor and source of the cocaine that is sold in small plastic bags on the bailes by the drug gangs. “C.V.” stands for “Commando Vermelho”, one of the major drug gangs in Rio – a gang so self concious that it even sells fan t-shirts with “C.V.” prints.

With twenty-eight years (yes, that’s 28) of DJ experience, Amazing Clay is one of Rio’s most experienced DJs. One of the founders of the „Equipe Curtisom Rio“, one of the earliest sound systems of baile funk, Clay started to DJ in 1980 when the original Rio funk scene was moving from the 1970s sound of disco, soul and funk to early American rap. When „Planet Rock“ hit Rio in 1982, Amazing Clay played it at his parties. Ever since, he has seen various forms of Rio baile funk emerge and vanish – like a rock, Amazing Clay is here to stay.Today Amazing Clay is DJing at more then five parties every week, most notably at the ‘Boquierao’ baile next to Rio’s Santos Dumont airport. Clay s the producer of a huge range of big baile funk artists like Mr. Catra, Deize Tigrona, MC Gringo, MC Dido or Bonde da Oskley. He is the creator of the „Montagem Bonanza“, which introduced the Bonanza theme in the baile funk scene. Recently, Clay produced large parts of MC Gringo´s „Gringão“ album, which currently receives critical acclaim around the world. Following the acclaim of his “Baile Funk Masters” release, Amazing Clay recently remixed Munk´s “Live Fast Die Young” as well as João Gilberto´s “Bim Bom” and Luiz Bonfá + Maria Toledo´s “Samburá” for the “Bossa Do Morro” compilation on Universal Jazz Germany. His remix of Fréderic Chopin´s “Etude In C Minor” received widespread acclaim. For his live performances, Clay plays live on a MPC.

Take „TRIBOS“, which PITBULL produced together with Rio DJ Dedé. Hands down, this could be considered one of the best tracks coming out of Rio in years. With it’s collage of Japanese gong sounds, Chinese drums, Brazilian Indian chants, carried by the typical Rio tamborzao beat, „Tribos“ travels the world in a breathless 2.20mins of pure sonic bliss. If Timbaland would’ve grown up in Rio, „TRIBOS“ would’ve been one of his compositions.

“KRAFTFUNK“ is SANY PITBULL’s bowing down to Germany´s Kraftwerk and their tectonic shifting musical efforts that left deep impact in Brazilian and especially Rio music culture. „Without Kraftwerk, Baile Funk would’ve never become what it is today“, remarks Sany, „Trans Europe Express and Afrika Bambaataa’s interpretation in Planet Rock are the musical foundations of baile funk culture“. With a melody hook resembling late 70s European elektronische Musik, „Kraftfunk“ greatly bridges the past with the current.

„Beatch From Brasil“ dives into Brazilian music essentials, mixing up a berimbau, Samba beats with an electro funk rhythm, and soulful chords. In opposite to the vast majority of funk tracks, who are strictly banging, „Beatch From Brasil“has a deep edge, putting smooth sensibilties into the beat alchemy of baile funk.

With „Baile Funk Masters“ Man Recordings starts a second vinyl series which deals with the mad beats from Rio’s favelas. While the „Funk Mundial“ series focuses on the transatlantic dialogue between Brazil’s most versatile ghetto word smiths and various hand picked European producers, „Baile Funk Masters“ exclusively presents the real deal: Raw, uncut baile funk, straight outta studios of Rio De Janeiros’s currently hottest producers – all put on good ol’ wax.

#1 in the series is kick started by DJ Sandrinho, who is considered to be one of Rio´s brightest young MPC wizards. Long time DJ of the „James Brown of baile funk“, Mr.Catra, Sandrinho’s skills as a spinmeister and producer were wielded in many many baile funk parties over the years. From Rio to Stockholm, from Paris to Berlin to São Paulo: This 25 year old from the favela of Borel has rocked many parties around the world. Recently, he produced remixes for Gotan Project, Edu K and M.I.A., and his tracks have been included in compilations like „Favela Chic“ and the 2nd volume of „Rio Baile Funk More Favela Booty Beats“.

With his contribution to the „Baile Funk Masters“ series, DJ Sandrinho presents some of his hottest tracks. The EP starts with „Italiano Lento“, where one of baile funk’s most sampled sound bits gets another splendid treatment: Added with some „oohs“ and „ahhs“, the folkloresque mafia-soundtrack splinter receives a sensual rework. In „Berimbau“ Sandrinho mixes up the traditional sound of a Berimbau with DJ Battery Brain’s infamous „Volt Mix“ beat. The track was already licensed to the 2nd volume of the highly acclaimed „Rio Baile Funk Favela Booty Beats“c ompilation.

„Tiroteio“, shows another example of the sonic avantguardism that Baile Funk represents. Consisting only of a dirty laugh and a gun shot put upon a funk riddim, it demonstrates the versatility with which minimalist sounds can be shaped in an MPC into a musique concrete that no booty is able to resist. „Sampler Louco“ returns to the first theme of „Italiano Lento“ and goes freestyle, with Sandrinho twisting his MPC till it bleeds. And last but not least the bonus instrumental „Montagem Percuca“ with it’s percussive playing a perfect backdrop for any aspiring funk MC. „Ta ligado!“
