A choreographer friend of mine told me some years ago that for a while Mick Jagger was doing his daiIy workouts to my 2nd “Rio Baile Funk Favela Booty Beats” compilation. Of course: There´s no better music to flex your bones than baile funk. However, when Till of So Shifty pointed out to me that DJ Amazing Clay´s “Deixa O Tamborzão Tocar” feat. MC Gus is one of the hottest tracks currently played at “Zumba” workouts (apparently the latest rage in the world of workout) I found it quite bizarre watching the videos:
“Deixa o Tamborzão Tocar” was released on Baile Funk Masters #4 by DJ Amazing Clay (Man 022).
P.S. We just got word that the mother of Dubble Dutch is a Zumba instructor.
Curtisom is one of the oldest still remaining, independent baile funk sound systems in Rio. The late Amazing Clay has been a major part in it´s steady success over more than three decades. For a while now Curtisom parties have been taking place at the Boqueirão, right next to the Santos Dumont airport and is considered one of the best – police-hustle and gang-free – funk party in Rio.
With the help of our favourite photographer, Vincent Rosenblatt, Curtisom now run a blog which is worth checking out, as it is very accurately documenting each party and gives a great insight in current happenings in Rio Funk. Which, due to the momentarily urban transformation of Rio to a hyper expensive, favela cleaned out metropolis, have drastic effects in the city´s music and culture production. We just got word from Rio that DJ Amazing Clay, one of baile funk´s pioneer DJs, passed away last night of cancer. RIP Clay, you´ll be sadly missed. Besides being long term DJ for Rio´s Curtisom Rio sound system, the Amazing Clay studio has been pivotal for the funk carioca sound on Man Recordings. It was there where we recorded all acappellas for the Funk Mundial series and enjoyed long, sweaty sessions of sample swapping and beat making. Accompanying you on tour through Germany and Poland with your MPC was a blast, and showed me a lot of the magic of live MPCing. You´ll be in our hearts forever.
