The internet has upended the music world. It has become the go-to place for new sounds. Diggers have set out to pore over LP racks and the internet’s every nook and cranny to unearth sounds that warrant airing or sampling. Thanks to them, music is travelling faster than ever before, and sometimes crossbreeding in surprising ways. Ghetto bass from Lisbon, electro-chaabi from Cairo’s suburbs, cumbia digital and baile funk from Brazil are only a few examples of the countless new genera now being played and blended.

The DIG IT! documentary webseries – 16 episodes in total – has travelled the world (Lebanon,Thailand, Argentina, the United States, the United Kingdom, Mali, Portugal, Germany, the Netherlands and France) to explore this new music world where people circulate sounds and fast-track cultural cross-fertilisation.

Watch the episode “Global Sound System” below featuring Man Rec boss Daniel Haaksman, plus affiliates such as Isa GT, Mo´Laudo and Leo Zhao reflecting on how language barriers have vanished and how music is travelling and mingling more forcefully than ever on the internet.
