#9 in the globe trotting Funk Mundial series on Man Recordings brings Rio Baile Funk MCing to Paris. Yes, for our ninth installment it’s time for a temporary alignment with the new French sound, embodied by Feadz, courtesy of Ed Banger records. Feadz, a.k.a. Fabien Pienta is the mastermind and producer behind the internet hype sensation Uffie, for whom Feadz created club-anthems like „Pop The Glock“, „Ready To Uff“ or „Hot Chick“. Feadz is also a prolific solo-artist who has released on top labels Ed Banger and Ellen Alien’s Bpitch Records amongst others, famous for his twisted take on electro funk, techno and various booty beats.

For his Funk Mundial contribution, Feadz officially declares his love for the mad beats from Rio De Janeiro, Brazil in the track „Subiu, Desceu“ feat. MC Wesley. Aged eight, MC Wesley is the youngest MC to ever release on Man Recordings. In classic French pop tradition, Feadz paired MC Wesley’s rants on the Europeans sitting up and the Brazilians sitting down with a classic Mozart melody, which brings the best of old Europe together with the booty shakin beats from Brazil’s sugarloaf city – all in a banging baile funk fashion.

Feadz – one of Europe’s hottest producers, teaming up with 8 year old MC Wesley from Rio. A legendary match – exclusively on Berlin’s Man Recordings.

Sorry for a week of no posting – my last days in Rio have been very hectic with loads of recording, going to bailes and visiting DJs and artists at their homes. Now I´m back in Berlin and working my way through tons of CDs and stuff that I got from various DJs. To be honest, there´s not much exciting new stuff around in Rio at the moment. The last new flavour in funk – Macumba – the more Bahian inspired funk, incorporating elements of Bahian music and Samba drumming, is limited to a few new tunes which circulate in the blogosphere. The majority of the rest is Tamborzinho after Tamborzinho, with hardly any exciting songs and lyrics – except for MC Maiquinho´s stuff. One of my favourite picks so far I found on a fifteen year old funk compilation, part of a big crate I copped on a street market in Rio´s center (see photo).

The baile cumbia clash / Funk Mundial #8 release party at ZZK club in Buenos Aires last Saturday was a real banger. Approximately four to five hundred people came down to shake their booties to Chancha Via Circuito (with an amazing live set), El Remólon (100% all pure hip shakers), El Grant (presenting cool new ZZK stuff), Douster (block rocking beats) and Deize Tigrona´s live p.a. – the first ever baile funk show on Argentinian soil. Presenting anthems like “Injeção”, “Sex-O-Matic”, “Miniatur De Lulu”, “Bandida” or her recent collab with Buraka, “Aqui pra voçes”, Deize proofed once more, that she is the undisputed queen of baile funk, able to rock any club from Kopenhagen to Buenos Aires.

Thanks to El Grant, Giorgio Ronna, El Remolón, Naim, Villa Diamante, Pablo and his three cute sisters for making this weekend so special. ZZK rules!!

For its 8th installment, the Funk Mundial series temporarily moves to Buenos Aires, Argentinia to present what is quite possibly the first ever Baile Funk Cumbia record to be released. Yes, we’re talking about a world premiere here: The two music styles that recently put South America on the DJ radar again, are melting together in Funk Mundial #8: Baile Funk meets Cumbia.

FRIKSTAILERS

For this volume, four of the hottest producers of Buenos Aires digi-cumbia label ZZK teamed up with various Baile Funk Mcs from Rio De Janeiro. ZZK is to cumbia what Man Recordings is to baile funk – mixing up one raw, regional music style with the best of various genres to create a unique new sound. Founded as a label in 2008, ZZK broke internationally with their mixtapes, in which cumbia – the traditional pan-latin-american dancehall sound – was mixed up with reggaeton, hip hop and various forms of bass music. Recently, the label released its first compilation and full artist albums.

EL REMOLÓN

Frikstailers are followed by El Remolón, who hails from Buenos Aires and is one of the big whizkids in the digital cumbia revolution. His collaboration brings MC Marina from Rio De Janeiro en pair with the Autotune effect resulting in the light and irie „Vem Que Tem“.

DOUSTER

Track three is by Douster and is a hip shaking cumbia-baile-reggaeton track „Puta Que Paria“ features Rio based MC Dandão, who was already featured in the legedary „Soca Ali Baba“ on Funk Mundial #3 by Crookers.

The EP closes with a great, deep contribution by Chancha Via Circuito, another young talent from the ZZK camp. With his feature of MC Pretinho on „Buçetão“ (meaning „Pussy“) he created a stunning tune that is soulful in vybe, explicit in lyrcis and fresh with a sharp half-time double-time rhythm architecture that breaks up the slow mo cumbia groove into a rocking stomper.

Funk Mundial #8: A stunning new release in the acclaimed Man Recordings series, presenting the first ever Cumbia-Baile Funk blends on vinyl. And at the same time it’s one of the first ever Brazilian-Argentinan music cooperation in today’s electronic music. Maybe the sound of both Rio and Buenos Aires, two of South America’s prime cities had to move to a Berlin label first, to come together?
